Do not store for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

Matthew 6:19-21

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched. They must be felt with the heart.

Helen Keller

Lawrence, a Deacon of the early Roman Church, was charged with caring for the poor and administering the church's possessions. During the persecutions of 258 AD the Roman prefect Cornelius ordered Lawrence to surrender the church's wealth, which far surpassed the wealth of the empire, and present it to the emperor in three days. On the appointed day, Lawrence gathered the widows, orphans, crippled, blind and poor that the Roman Christians supported and told Cornelius that these were the church's true treasures. In anger, Cornelius condemned Lawrence to death.

How true it is that we do not recognize our real treasures. We become lost in the cacophany of the world. We are assaulted with promises and allures: promises of looking more beautiful if we buy this makeup; younger if we dye our hair; more admired if we drive this car; happier if we but had that new house. Ephemeral things hold our interest, capture our attention, compel us to center our lives on ourselves in a neverending quest for self fulfillment. We surrender the truly meaningful things of life, our true treasures, for transitory, inconstant illusions. The poor, the homeless, the addicted, those who require our care, be they spouse, child, parent or neighbor, these are our true treasures for they show us the face of God and open up for us an infinite vista of compassion and love which no earthly treasure can equal. Instead of the vicious circle of consumerism, which never truly brings happiness or satisfies our longing for peace, the concern for and reaching out to those who need us bring incomparable riches and true fulfillment which no material wealth can achieve.

Treasures abound in our home. They come in all shapes, sizes and ages. They bring us joy, love, worry, sorrow. They give our home its soul, its reason to be, its mission. The house rings with their laughter, their crying, their pain, their fears. They bring us contentment and peace and they teach us patience, perseverence and hope. They shore up our faith when it weakens and teach us to have optimism in the future. They are our life and our true treasure.

The joy born of love of God enables us to see the world from an entirely different point of view. Before, when shackled to the ego, we were cooped up within the narrow walls of space and time. But once the chains are broken, one falls heir to immensities beyond all telling. Then we find our greatest joys not the things we cling to, but in what we surrender; not in the asking for anything but in the giving of something; not in what others can do fu us, but in what we can do for others.

Fulton J. Sheen

Find out what God has given you and take what you need; the remainder which you do not need is required by others.

Saint Augustine

We thank you for making this work possible and enabling us to care for the treasures God has given us. We love you and wish you God's peace.

Then he took a little child, stood him in the midst, and putting his arms around him, said to them, "Whoever welcomes a child such as this for my sake welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes, not me, but Him who sent me".

Mark 9:36-37

The children on these pages are the face of God. In them He has become completely dependent on us. Thank you for your support of this work. We love you and wish you blessings of peace and joy.
